Based on Jungian principles, this Practice works with the child's subconscious. The practitioner asks non-intrusive questions about the picture itself rather than probing into the child's life, thus, giving children a safe, low-pressure space to explore their feelings, build resilience, and reach a symbolic resolution at their own pace.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, which relies heavily on direct questioning and, as a result, can feel overwhelming, this technique allows children to express what’s on their mind through drawing.

What is Drawing and Talking Therapy?

Drawing and Talking Therapy is a gentle, 12-week child-centered approach that uses creative expression to help young people process difficult emotions, trauma, anxiety, or stress.

What age range is Drawing and Talking therapy suitable for?

Drawing and Talking is primarily designed for children aged 5 and above, though it can also benefit teenagers and young adults who struggle with traditional verbal therapies, or who are on extensive CAMHS waitlists.

How many sessions will a child need?

The approach follows a structured 12-week cycle. Sessions last 30 minutes and take place at the same time and day each week to create a sense of routine and security. Cycles may be repeated, given that a minimum of 12 weeks break is followed between intervention cycles.Â
Where do the sessions take place?

Sessions take place in a quiet, dedicated room designed to feel welcoming and low-pressure, in partner schools or at home. However, sessions may also be attended online via secure online platforms.Â
How do I know if a child needs this intervention?

Drawing and Talking is ideal for young people experiencing anxiety, emotional regulation struggles, sudden behavioral shifts, grief, family changes, or difficulty socializing. It is also beneficial for children who simply find it hard to express their feelings in words.
Is Drawing and Talking confidential?

Yes. To ensure that the young person feels completely safe, the specific details of their drawings and chats remain private. However, strict safeguarding protocols apply: if a disclosure indicates a safety risk, appropriate protective steps will be taken immediately.
Can parents/key workers attend the sessions with the child?

Sessions are strictly 1-to-1 between the young person and the practitioner. This privacy helps the child build a secure bond with their practitioner and express themselves freely. However, regular parent/key worker update check-ins are scheduled to discuss overall progress.
What happens if a child misses a week?

Because consistency is essential for the therapeutic process, we recommend keeping absences to a minimum. If a child misses a session due to an excused absence reported in accordance with our compulsory notice period, we will reschedule it so the child can complete the full 12-week journey.
